SAVE KSRTC

I would like to present some suggestions to save KSRTC before the Honourable Minister of Transport, Kerala, on the basis of Zero-base management,

1. The very first thing is the understanding of difference between asset and liability. Stop making new liabilities like purchase of 1000 new vehicles. Instead we can retain the chassis of old buses as it is, and change the power-plant and worn out transmission line only, then we can make all buses resting in “Kattappuram” in good running condition. Then easily we can make two thousand buses in proper running condition without going for new, with minimum cost.

2. Ensure Professional total management with a team capable of decision making at crucial times.

3. Blend of art, technology and modern economics should be adopted

4. Divide KSRTC into strategic business units (Profit making and expense saving)

5. Opportunities for Automobile engineers and diploma holders should be provided.

6. Train drivers to get fuel efficiency since most of the drivers have a habit of ‘clutch riding’

7. Train conductors for maximum collection.

8. Increase collection Bata.

8. Design the body of vehicles suitable for carrying goods also.

9. Invade the private sector led inter-state bus routs by using Ashok Leyland buses built with company body.

10. Train the driver and conductor to change tyres etc at the time of failure.

11. In every bus-stand, one Supermarket is constructed to increase revenue from taxes and common distribution of products with the help Supplyco, Horticorp and Kudumbasree units.

12. Strict inventory control and computerization and networking of stores should be done immediately.

13. Strict control over employees.

14. Reduction of fuel expense and pollution by a small engine modification called hot air induction system designed by Premji.

15. Within months KSRTC will have to make custom designed buses with minimal cost for their use, for this KSRTC can keep Dilip Chabria as a consultant.

17. Reduce accidents by testing of drivers with poor night vision.

18. Good roads by Public Public sector.

19. Proper planning, routing and scheduling of buses should be done.

20. Market study should be done to find out the depth of threat form parallel services.

21. Cultivation of bio-diesel in Barren lands of Attappady

22. Pension should be given by government.

23. Compensation for student concessions should be given by Govt.

24. Double the payment of M- panel people.

25. Buy only best parts because reliability will be almost double.

26. Embrace modern technology

27. Transfer tickets should be introduced

28. Reduce minimum charge.

29. Strict control over traffic modifications.

30. Capital punishment for violation of traffic.

31. The Managing Director should be aware of technical problems also. It is a very crucial factor as technologies in Automobile Engineering field is changing at a faster pace.

33. More good quality ticketing machines.

34. Simple and elegant body design that more people can stand by Dileep Chabria, the foremost automobile designer of India, particularly for city buses.

35. Periodic training and motivation sessions for employees for more productivity and better relationship with the public.

36. Give opportunities to companies like T.V. Sundram Iyengar & Sons Ltd, Tata, who have enormous service outlets, dealerships, bodybuilding units etc, to operate their buses with their own driver and cleaner between destinations in rent / kilometer basis. But the conductor should be from KSRTC. One condition must be kept that is after the depreciation period over; the bus should belong to the fleet of KSRTC. This one suggestion is more than enough to save KSRTC.

37. Give opportunities for private companies to build roads in BOT concept, preferably those who operate their buses as suggested above.

38. Interconnect all depots through computer networks so that it will be very easy to find out the parts, tyres, amount of fuel left in the storage, income, expense, vehicle utilization, presence of staff etc

Being an Automobile engineer, I can give the above suggestions and I know KSRTC can be brought into profit if it is handed over to professional management with very good cooperation from the employees, public and the Minister with VISION and enthusiasm…
